Laboratory Guideline for the Investigation of the Poisoned Patient

  • Abstract: This guideline incorporates the principle of progressive laboratory investigation in the context of care of a poisoned patient and provides algorithms for investigation as well as tests considered essential for patient management, and modification as well identifies medications useful in management.
  • Target Population: Any patient suspected of accidental or intentional poisoning
  • Exclusions:
    • • Non emergent toxicology testing
    • • Therapeutic drug monitoring
    • • Toxicology testing for other non-medical purposes
  • Working Group Membership: Representative from Alberta Poison Centre, medical toxicologists, general practitioners, emergency medical specialists, pathologists, clinical biochemists, laboratory technologists, laboratory administrators, pharmacists, member of the public
