SCOPE: Assessment of patients presenting with complaint of insomnia symptoms

ABSTRACT: 
This full text guideline assists physicians in the assessment of patients presenting with complaints or symptoms suggesting insomnia.  The guideline assists with differentiating acute versus chronic insomnia as well s primary sleep disorders, secondary insomnia and conditioned insomnia.  The guideline provides an algorithmic approach to diagnosis, and tools for assessment and sleep screening.

TARGET POPULATION: 
Adult patients presenting with insomnia signs or symptoms.

EXCLUSIONS: 
• Children <18 years
• Pharmacotherapy in pregnant or lactating women
• This guideline does not address the issue of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) or the management of primary sleep disorders.
